Ohio State football’s 2018 recruiting class is No. 1 in the nation after commitment of Matthew Jones – cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State is back where Urban Meyer wants it, on top of the 2018 recruiting rankings.

With the commitment of four-star offensive lineman Matthew Jones on Saturday, the Buckeyes passed Miami for the No. 1 spot in the 247Sports composite 2018 class rankings.

Jones is the 10th four-star prospect to commit to Ohio State, and the 10th top-100 national prospect out of 14 commitments. Ohio State also has commitments from five-star prospects defensive tackle Taron Vincent, defensive end Brenton Cox and quarterback Emory Jones.

The Buckeyes are one of two Big Ten programs (Penn State is No. 4) currently in the top 10 of the 247Sporst composite class rankings.

Ohio State has been in this spot before, and seemed primed to sign the No. 1 class during the 2017 recruiting cycle. But Alabama took the honor for the seventh straight year.

It’s the one thing Meyer has yet to do at Ohio State. And if you think where a class ultimately ends up ranked isn’t important, know that Meyer cares.

“Rankings are important,” Meyer said two years ago. “As long as you’re keeping score, we like to do the best we can.”

Ohio State’s class carries an individual average player rating of 95.34 (out of a possible 100) in the 247Sports composite ratings. That’s nearly four points better than the next closest class.
