Kobe Bryant, LA Lakers basketball star, killed in chopper crash

Washington | Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, 41, is among five peopled killed in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. His sudden death has triggered an outpouring of grief from fans.

The five-times NBA champion died when the private aircraft slammed into a wooded hillside in Calabasas, on the north-western edge of Los Angeles, in foggy conditions.

City officials confirmed Mr Bryant was among the dead on Sunday morning (Monday AEDT). Four other people died in the crash in a remote field.

Mr Bryant retired in 2016 after two decades with the Los Angeles Lakers, during which he cemented his reputation as one of the game’s all-time greats.

He was the third-leading scorer in NBA history until Saturday night, when the Lakers’ LeBron James passed him during a game in Philadelphia, where Bryant grew up.
